Love the staff, very friendly and helpful, and location is close to amenities. If you need directions, the front desk will print the info and make it easy to get to wherever you want to visit. Pool area is nice but needed new chaise lounges the last visit, hope that the next time we come, this has been remedied.

The time is 1931 just as the Nazi party began to become more than an obscure political party and slowly gaining power. The tone of the book is ominous and dark. The only character I liked is Dr Shuman. It took Katherine Ann Porter 22 years to complete this novel and she was 70 years old when it was published. It is based on her own experiences as a passenger traveling to study with a Guggenheim fellowship. All the characters are based on people she observed during her voyage. I love the story although I felt that there was too much focus on David Darling and Jenny Angel. That is my only issue with this book. I found the relationship of Dr. Shuman and La Condesa the most touching of all. It is a novel and I cant imagine why it is not required reading for any student of 20th Century American Literature. Yes the cast of characters can be overwhelming but Porter includes a list of them at the beginning of the novel. I had no problem keeping up with the characters perhaps because I saw the movie prior to reading this. It is a must read! The narrator is wonderful and keeps your attention. I actually have read and listened to it twice. I suggest having a copy of the book and listen as you read since the character list may overwhelm you if you do not understand the names of the Spanish characters who are no more than petty thieves and prostitutes. It was so hot in Escondido but the property was ok a little deteriorated and we had to stay inside with the air conditioning on. There are lots of illegal immigrants in the area asking for work and help with money. Everything was as it should be. Professional staff and clean facility. The front desk was a bit overwhelmed on check in and check out so each took longer than they should. Overall the stay was very pleasant and a good value for the price.
